John R. Gribbin (* 19. března 1946)^[1] je britský vědecký spisovatel, astrofyzik, a hostující vědecký pracovník v oboru astronomie na univerzitě v Sussexu.^[2] Jeho knihy se týkají kvantové fyziky, lidské evoluce, změn klimatu, globálního oteplování, vzniku vesmíru a životopisů slavných vědců. Také píše science fiction.

Život

Bakalářský titul z fyziky získal na univerzitě v Sussexu v roce 1966 o rok později obdržel magisterský titul z astronomie rovněž v Sussexu a doktorát z astrofyziky získal na univerzitě v Cambridgi roku 1971.^[3][4]

V roce 1968 se Gribbin dostal jako jeden ze studentů Freda Hoyla na Ústav teoretické astronomie, pro časopis New Scientist napsal o výzkumu na ústavu řadu povídek, nakonec byly na ústavu objeveny pulsary.^[5]

V roce 1974 napsal spolu se Stephenem Plagemannem knihu s názvem Jupiterův efekt, kde předpovídali, že konjunkce planet v kvadrantu na jedné straně od Slunce 10. března 1982 by mohla způsobit gravitační efekty, které by vyvolaly zemětřesení v San Andreas, případně zničit Los Angeles a jeho okolí.^[6] Gribbin se od předpovědi distancoval 17. července 1980, ve vydání New Scientist magazine.^[7]

V únoru 1982 zveřejnil znovu s Plagemannem knihu Přehodnocení Jupiterova Efektu, kde tvrdí, že erupce sopky Mount St. Helens v roce 1980 prokázala jejich teorii jako pravdivou, přestože planety nebyly přesně zarovnané. V roce 1999 Gribbin zavrhl i tuto myšlenku když prohlásil, že se mu tato teorie nelíbí a že lituje, že s ní měl kdy co společného.

V roce 1984 publikoval jednu ze svých nejznámějších knih Pátrání po Schrödingerově kočce: Kvantová fyzika a skutečnost.^[8] Tato kniha patřila mezi první vlnu publikací popularizujících fyziku a předcházela Hawkingově Stručné historii času s milionými prodeji.^[9] Gribbinova kniha byla uváděna jako příklad jak oživit zájem o studium matematiky.^[10]

V roce 2006 se zúčastnil vysílání BBC rádia 4 jako „znalec“. Modetátor Matthew Parrise diskutoval s profesorkou Kathy Sykesovou a Gribbinem, zda byl Einstein „opravdu ,šílený génius‘“.^[11]

V roce 2009 Světová konference vědeckých žurnalistů Britské asociace spisovatelů vědy prezentovala Gribbina a jeho celoživotní dílo.^[12]

Recenze Gribbinových knih

Konzervativní politický časopis Spectator popsal Gribbina jako „jednoho z nejlepších a nejplodnějších spisovatelů popularizujících vědu“ v hodnocení knihy Science: A History, kde chválí autora za zajímavý a temperamentní způsob jak píše o vědě a vědcích, ale kritizuje ho za to, že v knize neposkytuje adekvátní zastoupení slavných ve vědě.^[9]

Henry Gee editor magazínu Nature, popsal Gribbina jako „jeden z nejlepších spisovatelů píšících o vědě“.

Recenze knihy The Universe: A Biography v časopise Physics World chválí jeho schopnosti vysvětlit složité myšlenky.^[13]

V recenzi knihy Flower Hunters (spoluautorkou byla jeho manželka) ve Wall Street Journal byl popsán jeho způsob psaní jako suchý, s velkým množstvím detailů, ale neschopností zprostředkovat širší kulturní kontext. Recenze uváděla, že kapitoly biografických medalonků jsou příliš často povrchní a krátké, a kritizovala knihu pro do očí bijící opomenutí významných sběratelů rostlin.^[14]

V recenzi knihy The Reason Why v magazínu Times Higher Education se uvádí, že Gribbin píše o spekulativních záležitostech a představuje některé teorie bez důkazů, ale oceňuje jeho komplexní výzkum a lyrické psaní.^[15]

Recenze jeho životopisu Stephena Hawkinga v Los Angeles Times, vyjádřila obavy, že Gribbinova a Whiteova kniha nebyla upravena pro americké čtenáře a že některé čtenáře mohou být výsledkem zklamáni. Uvádí rovněž, že některé informace autorů o amerických vzdělávacích institucích jsou „prostě špatné“.^[16]
