Hélène Cixous ( /sɪkˈsuː/; bahasa Prancis: [siksu] ; lahir 5 Juni 1937) adalah seorang pengajar, penulis feminisme Prancis, penulis puisi dan naskah drama, filsuf, kritikus sastra, dan ahli retorika ^[2] Cixous menjadi terkenal setelah menerbitkan artikelnya yang berjudul "The Laugh of the Medusa" atau "Tawa Medusa".^[3] Artikel tersebut pun menjadikannya sebagai salah satu pemikir awal dalam ranah feminisme pasca struktural. Ia juga mendirikan pusat studi feminisme pertama di sebuah universitas Eropa di di Centre universitaire de Vincennes dari Universitas Paris, yang sekarang menjadi Universitas Paris VIII.^[4]

Cixous mendapatkan gelar kehormatan dari Queen's University dan Universitas Alberta di Kanada; dari University College Dublin di Irlandia; Universitas York dan University College London di Inggris; dan juga dari Universitas Georgetown, Universitas Northwestern, serta Universitas Wisconsin – Madison di Amerika Serikat. Pada 2008, ia diangkat menjadi "Andrew D. White Professor-at-Large" di Universitas Cornell hingga Juni 2014.^[5]

Kehidupan dan karier

Karier akademis

Cixous mendapatkan gelar agrégasinya dalam sastra Inggris pada 1959 ^[6] dan gelar Doctorat ès lettres pada 1968. Fokus utamanya pada saat itu adalah sastra Inggris dan karya-karya James Joyce. Cixous menjadi asisten di Universitas Bordeaux pada 1962, kemudian menjabat sebagai asisten utama di Sorbonne dari 1965 hingga 1967, dan ditunjuk sebagai ketua konferensi di Universitas Paris-Nanterre pada 1967.^[7]

Pada 1968, setelah kerusuhan mahasiswa Perancis, karena mendirikan Universitas Paris VIII, Cixous dituduh menggunakan universitas tersebut "sebagai alternatif bagi lingkungan akademik tradisional Prancis." ^[8] Pada 1974, Cixous pun mendirikan pusat studi perempuan di Universitas tersebut, dan merupakan yang pertama di Eropa.^[6] Cixous adalah profesor di Universitas Paris VIII dan di European Graduate School di Saas-Fee, Swiss.^[9]

Karya

Pada tahun 1968, Cixous menerbitkan disertasi doktoralnya yang berjudul "L'Exil de James Joyce ou l'Art du remplacement" ("Pengasingan James Joyce, atau Seni dari Perpindahan") dan pada tahun berikutnya ia menerbitkan novel pertamanya, "Dedans" ("Di Dalam"), sebuah karya semi-otobiografi yang memenangkan Prix Médicis.^[6]
