Nota: Ia amat sukar bagi menentukan dengan tepat bila Empayar Rom berakhir dan Empayar Byzantium bermula; Empayar Rom sebenarnya berpecah kepada bahagian timur dan barat untuk maksud pentadbiran oleh Diocletian pada 284. Calon bagi maharaja Byzantine pertama termasuk Konstantine I Empayar Rom (maharaja Kristian pertama, yang memindahkan ibunegara ke Konstantinople), Valens (Pertempuran Adrianople (378) merupakan salah satu cara tradisi memulakan tempoh medieval), Arcadius (sebagai Theodosius I sering dianggap maharaja terakhir Empayar Rom tunggal), dan Zeno I (kerana maharaja barat terakhir Romulus Augustus telah digulingkan ketika pemerintahannya).
