Amartya Kumar Sen (Benggali: অমর্ত্য সেনcode: bn is deprecated , [ˈɔmort:o ˈʃen, o-mort-o syén]; lahir 3 November 1933) ialah seorang ahli ekonomi dan filsuf dari India.

Biografi

Awal hidup

Amartya Sen lahir dalam sebuah keluarga penganut Hindu kasta Kayastha di Bengal (kini Benggala Barat di India); mereka duduk di kawasan kuarters universiti Shantiniketan. Dia mendapat namanya (অমর্ত্য ômorto, "hidup abadi") daripada Rabindranath Tagore, sasterawan terkenal yang turut bekerja dalam universiti ini. Ibu bapanya kelahiran Wari dan Manikganj, Dhaka (kini di Bangladesh); ayah Amartya, Ashutosh Sen, seorang profesor kimia di Universiti Dhaka serta juga Naib Canselor Universiti Delhi selama beberapa tahun, ibunya Amita Sen anak kepada sejarawan Kshiti Mohan Sen - mereka berpindah ke Benggala Barat pada tahun 1945 berikutan pembahagian India British.
